History

Icestock sport, formerly also called ‘ice shooting’, has existed for many centuries. The first references can already be found in the 15th century in Tyrol, and in paintings by the artist Pieter Brueghel from 1565, people can be seen playing icestock sport.

The first club was founded in Austria in 1875. Later, the sport was also showcased at the Olympic Games in 1936 in Garmisch and in 1964 in Innsbruck – but only as a demonstration event. Today, the IFI (International Federation Icestocksport) is an official member of the IOC, even though the sport is not yet part of the Olympic program.

In 1950 Germany, Austria and Italy founded the international federation. Today more than 40 countries are members.

In South Tyrol, the sport came around 1900 through workers and craftsmen from Austria and spread rapidly. In Lana, the first club was founded in 1908. Also in Eppan and at Lake Monticolo, the sport was soon played – especially in winter it was a popular pastime.
